When drawing horses hooves, remember there is an "ankle" shape. As you see, the leg gets very thin before coming to the hoof. Also there are "feathers" that come down off of the fetlock. Shire horses have lots and lots of "feathers" on ther hooves and are often white. When colouring the hoof, remember ONLY to shade up and down, and right to left, as this is the pattern you see on a real horses hoof. The right and left lines though are CURVED and NOT straight.
When sketching the head, note that the line for the cheek curls up to the direction of the ears. The horses mouth is always "frowning" and horses never smile.
Notice on the eye, I have left a white dot at the back. This is light shining in the eye, and it gives life to the subject. At the other end of the eye, it shapes into a point, as all animals do. This is also the same on humans. Remember this tip, as people often look at the eye of an animal in a painting before anything else.
On this diagram, i have labled the "points on a horse". This is what all the limbs, muscles and bones are called, the same our legs, head, shoulder, ect. As you see, I have drawn the horse trotting, as this is a polular pose for most artists. when a horse is moving, note the tail (and mane) sways just as our hair would when we move.
The legs on a horse alternate when they walk or trot. example; the front right and back left always move together, and the front left and back right pair up too. Remember this as it is very important to get an impressive horse sketch.
Look at the horses back leg. You will see that the skin stretches, just like the skin between your fingers. This is another one to remember.
^Legs paired together.^
(Above) Just some quick sketches I did of different horse paces.
(Below and side) Some different horse breeds. Try to practise different ones to learn more about them.
Try drawing different postions and even several pictures together like I have done here with the horse jumping and the leaping cat on the "cats and dogs" page.
